DESERT ROSE IN BLOOM; WELCOME TO THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF QATAR

27th March was an iconic day as Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani inaugurated the National Museum of Qatar in its new building.

The ceremony saw many dignitaries in attendance , Personal Representative of the Amir H H Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani, H H Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al-Thani, H H Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al-Thani, HE Sheikh Jassim bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al-Thani and Speaker of the Shura Council H E Ahmed bin Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud.

The entrance to the museum is marked by a specially commissioned art work by Qatari artist Ali Hassan Al Jaber, Wisdom of a Nation, whose geometric design draws on the image of the Qatari flag and an excerpt from a poem by the founder of modern-day Qatar, Sheikh Jassim bin Muhammad Al Thani. Just before the entrance to the permanent galleries is a work by the Qatari artist, patron and collector Sheikh Hassan bin Mohammed Al Thani, Motherland, evoking the connections between the desert, the sea, and the women of Qatar.

The museum is surrounded by a 112,000-square-metre park with gentle landscaping, a broad 900-metre-long artificial lagoon, gardens with large green areas, paths and walkways, designed by French landscape architect Michel Desvignes on the overall plan for a natural, truly Qatari setting for the museum.

The 1.5 kilometer winding gallery path will take you into a journey never seen before. It will walk you through the history of Qatar to its present advancements which will be a taste of country’s music, poetry, archaeological and heritage objects, artwork and many more through their 11 permanent galleries and many other variations.

The National Museum of Qatar is organised in three ‘chapters’: ‘Beginnings’, ‘Life in Qatar’, and ‘The Modern History of Qatar’ which define the 11 galleries of the museum.

Apart from this, there are multiple attractions which have been especially curated for the viewers to understand the purpose of the museum better and make it more informative and interactive.

The National Museum of Qatar has designed and developed a wide variety of exciting and engaging learning resources for school, family and youth audiences. Hands-on interactive gallery spaces, family trails, student activity booklets, art-trolleys, handling collections and outdoor playgrounds all contribute to create a dynamic and fun environment for young learners.

There are many other attractions like Gift shops and cafés for the visitors to explore at leisure times.
