MIA Celebrates International Day of Islamic Art Through Series of Activities

DOHA, 17 November, 2020 — For International Day of Islamic Art on 18 November, the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) is hosting a series of activities in celebration of Islamic art, which features throughout the museum’s extensive collection of objects.

The International Day of Islamic Art, declared during the 40th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 2019, aims to raise awareness of past and contemporary artistic expressions of Islam, and highlight the contributions of Islamic Art to civilization.

To mark the day, MIA is currently running a social media campaign with a series of Instagram posts celebrating key dynasties and objects in Islamic history. Members of the community are also invited to take and share a selfie wearing Islamic art-inspired clothing.

On International Day of Islamic Art, the museum will launch the ‘MIA Favourites’ trail, which features objects selected by staff and the background to why they chose the specific piece. The trail map can be collected at MIA’s Information Desk. MIA will also host a walk-in sewing workshop in the museum’s atrium where members of the community can create their own traditional textiles. The museum is also offering a Mixed Media Islamic Art class at 4:00 pm for children between 8 and 11 years old. The class aims to encourage children to engage with contemporary Islamic Art. Meanwhile, on 24 November, MIA will host a workshop for children at 4:00 pm during which they can sketch the museum’s famous Blue Monkey.

Salem Abdulla al-Aswad, Deputy Director of Learning and Outreach, MIA, said:“Through our curated activities to mark International Day of Islamic Art, MIA invites members of the community to explore our vast collection of objects that encapsulates Islamic art over the past 1,400 years. The MIA Favourites trail is also great way for visitors to uncover hidden gems within our collection that they may never have noticed before.”

All activities will be carried out with adherence to the necessary COVID-19 safety measures.  To register to attend one or more of the activities, please visit: https://www.mia.org.qa/en/
