AL SADD BEAT AL RAYYAN ON PENALTIES TO RETAIN AMIR CUP TITLE

Al Sadd on Friday retained Amir Cup title after edging Al Rayyan 5-4 on penalties in the final, following a 1-1 draw at the brand new Al Thumama Stadium. 

Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani crowned the champions, who clinched their 18th Amir Cup title.

Yacine Brahimi (44′) minute put Al Rayyan ahead with a strike on penalty before Santi Cazorla pulled the goal back with a penalty strike in 58th minute in front of 40,000 spectators, attending the final as well as opening ceremony of Al Thumama Stadium. 

Nothing could separate the two sides in tie-breaker until Al Sadd goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb blocked Al Rayyan’s last penalty taken by Shoja Khalilzadeh. Woo-Young Jung sealed victory for Al Sadd.

HH the Personal Representative of HH the Amir Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al-Thani, HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani, and a number of Their Excellencies sheikhs and ministers attended the match.

The final was also attended by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, a number of heads of Arab and international sports associations, members of the press and media, and football fans.

Al Sadd defeated Al Rayyan in a penalty shootout 5-4, after the end of original time with a 1-1 draw.

Following the conclusion of the match, HH the Amir handed the trophy and gold medals to Al Sadd team and the silver medals to Al Rayyan team.
