Crowning Excellence: Salem Al Dawsari and Samantha Kerr Shine at AFC Annual Awards Doha 2022


In a night filled with anticipation and celebration, Salem Al Dawsari, hailing from Saudi Arabia, was crowned the AFC Player of the Year at the prestigious AFC Annual Awards Doha 2022. Alongside him, the Australian soccer sensation Samantha Kerr also received the same honor in the women’s category. The awards ceremony, held at the Qatar National Convention Centre’s Al Mayassa Theatre, marked a momentous occasion for these exceptional athletes.

Al Dawsari, who currently represents Al Hilal. His journey to this accolade is nothing short of extraordinary. Over the years, Al Dawsari has emerged as a prominent figure in Middle Eastern football, with an impressive tally of 16 major trophies to his name, earned while wearing the Al-Hilal jersey. His collection includes five Saudi Pro League titles, three King Cups, Saudi Supercups, and Saudi Crown Prince Cups, as well as two AFC Champions League titles, making him a true standout in the region.

Al Dawsari’s impact is not limited to domestic achievements. On the international stage, he etched his name into the annals of football history during the 2022 Qatar World Cup group matches. Leading his squad, he orchestrated a stunning upset by defeating the eventual champions, Argentina. This remarkable accomplishment catapulted him to greater recognition and solidified his reputation as a football luminary.

In addition to Al Dawsari’s impressive recognition, the AFC Awards also honored other outstanding individuals in the world of football. Japan’s Hajime Moriyasu was named the men’s AFC Coach of the Year, while Shui Qingxia from China received the accolade in the women’s category. Iran’s Moslem Oladghobad clinched the AFC Futsal Player of the Year award for his invaluable contribution to his team’s campaign in the AFC Futsal Asian Cup in Kuwait.

The ceremony was not just about individual accolades. Various football associations and organizations were also acknowledged for their significant contributions to the sport. The AFC Member Association of the Year awards went to the Uzbekistan Football Association (Platinum), Lebanese Football Association (Diamond), The Football Association of Hong Kong, China Limited (Gold), and Guam Football Association (Ruby). The Central Asian Football Association received the AFC Regional Association of the Year award.

Furthermore, the AFC President Recognition Awards for Grassroots Football celebrated the efforts of different associations in promoting the growth of the sport. Football Australia was honored with the Gold award, Guam Football Association with the Silver award, and the All India Football Federation with the Bronze award.
