Over the last week Qatar has seen some amazing news-making moments. These moments have come from all fields which include arts, culture, and science. 1. Italian Talent Enthralls Audience With Original Compositions

Qatar saw the talented young Italian composer and pianist Alessandro Martire perform his best for the audience. On Friday, 14th February, Alessandro enthralled residents at the Katara Opera House as he played original compositions from three albums. This also included the upcoming album “Share The World”. The musical concert was done in collaboration with the Italian Embassy and Cultural Village Foundation. The young musician-composer was accompanied by talented string quartet from Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra playing violin, viola and cello.

2. Nothwestern University-Qatar Participates in Creative Media Festival

The Creative Media Festival saw students from Northwestern University in Qatar spend the whole weekend engaging and having fun as they put their media expertise to work. The yearly event took place for over 48 hours at NU-Q venue. Many projects were created by the brilliant minds which focused on the theme “Rising Up/Uprising”. More than 50 students made short films, documentary, poetry recitation and much more to show off their creative side.

3. Tomatoes Produce Dramatically Increases At Hydroponic Center

It was quite an achievement for the Hydroponic Trial and Demonstration Center as they clocked in a 33 kg yield of tomatoes per sqm. The center uses high quality facilities along with qualified professional and agronomists. Due to their hardwork and the high yield was achieved in the multispan greenhouse with evaporative cooling. This yield, as per sources, is 6 times higher than the average productivity in the country. It is also 50 per cent higher than other Qatari farmers could achieve in similar conditions.

4. Sainsbury’s Store Now Open At Al Meera Hypermarket, Qatar

Leading British supermarket chain Sainsbury’s opened in Qatar over the weekend. It was inaugurated at the Al Meera’s flagship Hypermarket, Hyatt Plaza Mall, under the patronage of Sheikh Suhaim bin Khalid Al Thani, Chairman of Marakez Holding, and the UK Ambassador to Qatar, H E Ajay Sharma. Also present were representatives from Al Meera Group and Sainsbury’s UK. Now shoppers will be able to find a wide range of UK products in Qatar’s Al Meera hypermarkets.

5. WCM-Q Researchers Contribute To Identify ‘Detox’ Genes In Humans

Qatar has seen steady and fast growth in the area of genetic studies as well. This time the researchers from Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) have worked and contributed to the international study identifying 90 genes which determine human metabolism. These genes also work together to rid the human body of toxins via the kidneys. Other scientists to contribute to the study were form institutes across the world and the research was published in Nature Genetics, a renowned biomedical journal.
